Runner Adds Extra Layer of Meaning to her First Marathon

Avery Pratt always planned on running a marathon and when she saw that Akron Children’s Hospital was the title beneficiary of the Akron Marathon Race Series, she knew this was the perfect opportunity to make her first marathon a reality.
“Growing up I faced many challenges, mentally and physically, and my family, along with Akron Children’s, helped me through many of them,” Avery said. “The care that I received from Akron Children’s helped save my life.”
Avery will run her first marathon in a few weeks at the FirstEnergy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon & Team Relay. As she’s been training, she’s also been raising money for Akron Children’s as a Children’s Champion.
“The commitment to be a Children’s Champion was one small way in which I could pay it forward to others in need,” Avery said.
Avery ran her first half marathon in August at the Goodyear Half Marathon & 10K and said training for both races has an added meaning from her participation in the Children’s Champions program.
“Supporting others by donating to a cause that you believe in encourages you to keep on pushing through the training process,” Avery said. “When you know that the money you raise will ultimately help others, each run feels a little more meaningful.”
With a few weeks left, Avery has surpassed her fundraising goal of $1,000.
