Employee Finds Another Way to Give Back to Akron Children’s

Debbie Hawk has worked as a nurse at Akron Children’s Hospital for 39 years. Since she took up running 12 years ago, she has participated in the Akron Marathon, and this year is no different, except for one thing– in addition to running the half marathon, she’s also giving back to the hospital as a Children’s Champion.
“I was really excited when I found out that Akron Children’s would be the beneficiary of the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series this year,” Debbie said. “It has been heartwarming to read the stories of the hero patients, and I recognized some of the heroes that have been to the operating room.”
When Debbie registered for the half marathon, she signed up to fundraise for Akron Children’s as a Children’s Champion in honor of her son who is running his first full marathon.
“I am so excited to share this race with him,” Debbie said. “This race is more than just running or walking, it’s feeling the experience and uniqueness of the race along the way.”
That race day feeling is what caused Debbie to sign up for the Akron Marathon after the race’s first year.
“I was on call in surgery the first year of the Akron Marathon. A co-worker and I watched the race activities from the window and vowed to run it the following year,” Debbie recalled. “We organized a relay team that next year, and I have participated in it ever since then.”
“The Akron Marathon is a great race, the city really shines that day,” Debbie said. “Where else can you have the Goodyear Blimp flying overhead during the start of a race?”
Debbie has also been supporting Akron Children’s in a variety of ways since she started working at the hospital 39 years ago, and she was excited to add Children’s Champions to her list of ways to give back to her workplace.
“The Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon Race Series is great experience and by participating as a Children’s Champion, you can make a difference in the care of our patients,” Debbie said. “We have some great programs here at Akron Children’s that rely on funding, and what a unique way to help!”
