Runner Fundraises to Pay Forward the Support His Family Received

For Matt Nyce, running in the Akron Children’s Hospital Akron Marathon, Half Marathon & Team Relay presented by FirstEnergy is all about support – from the community lining the course on race day to runners fundraising to make a difference for Akron Children’s.
Matt and his wife experienced firsthand the care Akron Children’s staff provides when their second son, Wesley, was born in April 2015.
“We knew he had Down syndrome, a heart defect and some other health problems, so we knew his life would be a struggle from the start,” Matt said.
Matt said that while the doctors at Akron Children’s did everything they could for his son, Wesley passed away 8 hours after he was born.
“The hospital has continued to support us over the years and I wanted to do something to give back to the great people there,” Matt said.
Matt started running when he was 12 years old and ran in middle school, high school and college. He took some time off running after college, but got back into it when his first son, Liam, was born.
“I wanted to be a good example for him,” Matt said. “It was important to me to be healthy for my family and to show my son the value of working very hard at what you like to do, which for me meant running.”
Signing up as a Children’s Champion when he registered for this year’s Akron Marathon seemed like a natural fit. Matt wanted to give back because he recognizes that the care Akron Children’s provides goes beyond simply treating patients, it also includes taking care of families as they go through difficult times.
“I chose to run as a Children’s Champion for my Wesley, and to help ensure the hospital has the resources it needs to help other parents and children in similarly difficult situations.”
